toby is of medium size, and compared to some of the other... 'oddities' about the land, does stand out in a crowd, but not for the reasons one might assume. he isn't bright blue, and doesn't have violet eyes or horns sprouting from his butt. in fact, he might just be one of the most normal felines around. instead of being a random color of the rainbow, he is gray. honestly, just gray. smoky gray. graaaaay. colorless? perhaps, if you don't count gray as a color.
toby isn't remarkably buff, or even tall. he's rather average, for a normal feline at least. he doesn't tower above everyone he meets, in fact, he may be just a bit undersized. not that you can really tell, though. he's not about to stand around next to fifty different cats just so you can get a size comparison. anyways; toby's coat is thick and almost bristly to the touch, but it's short and always sticking out at odd angles. he has a bit of a rough appearance, due to the furry patches that tend to stick out all over his body all floofy-like. but one of his most defining physical traits would be his tail, which unlike the rest of him, is silky and long. he looks almost squirrel-y from the side, and often people mistake his tail for that of another cats'.
the only marks that even begin to set toby apart from the common felines drifting about would have to be the two stripes that fall from the far ends of his orange eyes and drift beneath his jaws where they connect with each other. the blue stripes are so faded it's hard to tell they are even there. this may also be because of the blue highlights that naturally come with his gray pelt, but once you get close enough or know that they are there they're pretty easy to spot. his eye-stripes aren't the only stripes on his body, though. he has four thick patches of blue around the base of his tail, the tip, and two bands in the middle. these rings are darker than his eye stripes, and as thus, are his most defining physical color trait.

toby's mother was his biggest influence, and as such, his personality is like hers in many ways. toby is a naturally considerate feline, and has a soft way of going about things. toby wouldn't hesitate in helping other cat out, though he does tend to keep his distance after whatever favor he does. why he does this? well, it's mostly because he is easily pulled into others problems, and guilt trips work exceptionally well on him. someone could easily take advantage of him, and toby knows this. so he keeps his distance after showing off his softer side so that doesn't happen.
october rarely causes upsets between others and himself because of the fact that he likes to avoid violence. he is, and always will be, the 'peace-loving-loner-guy'. random acts of hostility don't sit well with him, but he never says anything against such acts for fear of fueling the fire. instead, he tends to leave the fight or conversation, and then sulks for a few hours before coming around and becoming sociable and intelligent again.
toby isn't stupid, no, he's far from it, but he isn't going to sit on his rump and plan out peace speeches months in advance. he's smart, sure, but he also 'goes with the flow'. he doesn't like to dwell on things for too long after they happen. keeping a positive outlook is key for his survival, or else his spirit would be broken within a few weeks of living as a nomad. seeing all that he does, it wouldn't be any skin of someones nose to utterly shatter this poor boy. it would be easy, and quick. toby knows this, and tries to keep his emotions on the 'happy' and 'kind' plane, though he isn't obnoxious or anything. he won't go charging up trees for the hell of it. he likes to consider things, and likes a little heated banter, but if it becomes too outspoken or non-friendly, he backs out immediately.
all in all, october can be a serious kind of fellow, despite most often being jovial, and can honestly worry about a complete stranger. he's a sweet boy, but can't stand aggressive actions towards anyone for any reason. because of this, he seems a bit antisocial.

to be totally honest, toby's history is all sorts of uninteresting. his mother was a gentle nomad, and his father an overbearing presence prone to disappearing acts. october and dear 'daddy' didn't get along at all, which didn't bother toby. his father only came around when he could find the time to, which wasn't very often. his parents may have been mates, but they weren't all that close. his mother was sweet and very kind, a real heart of gold beat in her chest. she cared for her kits with such raw affection that it always turned into over-protectiveness. she always had one eye on them, and when things got rough, they were immediately herded back home.
toby didn't mind his mother's attitude towards him like some of the other kits in his litter did. i'd be lying if i said he didn't secretly like the affection. sure, he got annoyed with her when she exceedingly fussed over him, but he knew her intentions were well met. on the other hand the three other kits in the litter, hated the way she fawned over them. they spent all the time they could away from toby and their mother. they played outside, once they came of age, and when their father came around they stuck to him like a cold he just couldn't shake. eventually, the second eldest of the kits left the family with the other two youngest following close behind. his mother was heart broken, and sweet toby just couldn't leave her.
of course, toby wasn't one to rely on someone for more than was natural, even if his mother begged him. so he left his mother a few months after his older siblings did. this was after assuring his mother that she was the greatest, she'd be fine, and that he'd come to visit now and then. of course, he really didn't mean that, but it was a nice notion to leave his loving mother with. so, toby set out on his own. he met cats everywhere he went, and came across his younger siblings once or twice, but nothing important happened between them. they may have been blood, but the four siblings couldn't have been more different.
after that, he stopped seeing his siblings around. toby wasn't really worried, they'd probably gained some of their fathers 'i-can-disappear-anytime-i-want' magic, so he let it be. and that leads us to the present day where toby can be found flitting about from place to place.
