sheets of rain pelted the cobblestone paths, creating a ruckus loud enough to send the ancestors themselves running for cover. lining the narrow paths, steep with age, were rickety carts and overturned crates. all in all, it was a place to avoid if you were humanoid. a place of filth, of grime. and this was the precise reason why the felines thrived.
that is, places of filth usually attract rats, who attract other sorts of prey such as birds and the like. so while rats are not the ideal prey, there are precious other pickings to be found.
and even in the darkest of times, food was food -- rook that takes flight wasn't a stars-above for nothing. they were brilliant, tough cats. not like those rising-sun, she thought with disapproval, who walk like they own the air itself.
she was insignificant enough to slip away for the afternoon, travelling to the city for some well-earned solitude. as the shadows turned long, as the sky darkened to evening and finally to dusk, she hadn't felt any pressing urgency to go back. thus rook took the time instead to fill her empty belly. might as well. i mean, i fight for the tribe, i even feed them -- i'm not even a hunter, and i hunt for them! 'cos numbers are low; you do what you can. so why should i go hungry? this was her reasoning as her eyes caught a flicker of movement. the black she-cat instinctively turned to where the mouse hid in the eaves of the building, hiding from herself, or a rat or worse. don't know, and quite frankly, don't care.
her periwinkle eyes narrowed, rook edged forward into the alley, feeling claustrophobic. the tribe cat wasn't used to this kind of hunting -- heck, she wasn't a warrior for nothing -- but do you really expect her to admit it to anyone, much less herself?
it was the noise that really set her off, though. she'd just reached the rodent, silent and stealthy. the evening breeze had ruffled her fur, the delicious odor of her prey a feast for the senses, when a loud crash! sounded by the dumpster.
"frap!" the ebony guard swore. she wheeled once again, this time facing the far end of 'dead cat alley.' at the end of the long passageway she could just make out a silhouette, apprehensive by it's unintentional disturbance. rook, her voice thick with ire, hissed, "and to what do i owe this wondorous occasion?"
